Old Heaven — auburn classical portrait

Art · Myth · Apparel

Some beauty still looks back.

There are clothes for being recognized. These are for being recognized by the right person.

A face you cannot quite place. A god with unfinished business. Something small and strange waiting near the cuff.

Old Heaven is a catalogue of such encounters. Come in. You may have been expected.

Gods. Strangers. Familiar faces.

Seven designs, each with an evening of its own.

No. 001 — The One Who Stayed

The party is over. Someone has opened a window. He has put his head on his arm, and you cannot quite decide whether he is asleep or merely finished with everyone.

Auburn curls. A scatter of gold. The sort of beauty that makes a person forget what he had intended to say.

We gave him the first number. Perhaps because he looks as though he has already heard the last word.

Hecate — At the Crossroads

You arrive with three explanations. She has three faces. This is unlikely to improve your position.

The dogs have stopped barking. Two torches burn where the road divides. You could still turn back, although you have begun to suspect that turning back is also a choice.

Old Heaven presents a concert for the hour when respectable people have gone home. November 16 on the back. The key is there, too. You will have to supply the door.

Jupiter — A Place at the Table

The invitation says dinner. The sky suggests a more complicated evening.

Gold on the table. Violet in the clouds. Above the temple, a man with a thunderbolt looks entirely comfortable with the seating arrangements.

You have spent enough evenings asking whether there is room for you. Come dressed as though the place was always yours.

Feast of Jove. September 13. Capitoline Hill, Rome. We have taken certain liberties with the concert promoter.

Helios — First Light

At six in the morning, the excuses are still asleep.

He comes over the horizon with the horses, the gold, and the unreasonable conviction that the day can be made to begin again. You have seen this performance before. Some mornings it is the only one you need.

A little incense rises on the back. A great deal of light arrives on the front.

The Dawn Tour. First light, every day. Attendance is a private matter.

Dionysus — After the Applause

You meant to stay for one drink. An old error, but occasionally a beautiful one.

He is standing beneath the ivy with a cup in his hand and the expression of someone who knows exactly why you came. Around him, the procession has already become a party.

The theatre waits on the back. There is a mask for grief and another for amusement. You may recognize both.

Old Heaven presents the Great Dionysia. Live in Athens. Dress for the part you have been keeping to yourself.

Heaven and Earth — Horatio’s Problem

Horatio brought an explanation. The sky brought reinforcements.

Rockets pass the old gods. Satellites keep their little appointments. Farther down, among the roots and stones, something with excellent manners and an improbable number of joints is waiting to be introduced.

We have all met a person who believes the world ends at the edge of his understanding. Wear this to dinner with him.

The strange gathering occupies the front. Shakespeare has the back: “There are more things in heaven and earth, Horatio, / Than are dreamt of in our philosophy.”

Death and the Miser — The Visitors

Someone has come for the money. Someone else has come for you.

The distinction matters, although the little creature at the pocket would prefer you did not dwell on it.

Death has kept his appointment. The angel is still making her case. Along the sleeve, an old man continues the business of counting. Behind you, a lantern is being carried by something you would rather not find carrying a lantern.

We let them out of Bosch’s room. They have arranged themselves around the garment with the quiet confidence of guests who were never invited.

There is plenty of black between them. Room for a decision.
